History
Universal Geneon was originally formed under the name of Pioneer LDC in 1981. In July 2003, the company was acquired by the Japanese advertising company Dentsu and marketing company renamed Geneon Entertainment, while its American division North, Pioneer Entertainment, Geneon USA was renamed.
In November 2004, Geneon USA signed an agreement with Toei Animation to distribute some of their titles in the North American market. Launch titles include air Maestro, interval and Slam Dunk. However, in late 2006, the agreement ended and all released sold out titles.
In March 2007, Geneon became the exclusive distributor for North America Bandai Visual USA. Four months later, it was announced ADV Films would take over the distribution, marketing and sales of Geneon U.S. properties in the United States, from October 1, 2007. According to the announcement, Geneon USA continue to acquire, license, and produce English subs and dub anime for release in North America. However, the agreement was canceled in September before applied, with none of the companies give details why beyond stating they were "unable to reach a mutual agreement." On December 3, Geneon USA division was completely closed down, with titles ordered through November 5 sent. Titles that were in the middle of the release or license, but remained unpublished in limbo. Shares of Bandai Visual USA were being distributed by Geneon were not affected by this closure, although some were delayed, while Bandai Visual found a new distributor.
Other North American distributor of anime, FUNimation Entertainment, Geneon began negotiating with U.S. to acquire some of the company's securities license. In July 2008 a formal agreement was announced and FUNimation acquired the rights to "manufacture, sell and distribute" several Geneon anime and live action titles. On November 12, 2008, Dentsu said it was selling its 80.1% stake in the company to Universal NBC Universal Pictures International Entertainment (UPI), which plans to merge the company with a division of Universal Pictures Japan to form a new company. Fusion closed on February 1, 2009. The new company is called Universal Entertainment Geneon Japan.
Reception
In 2006, Geneon was named "Best Company Anime "by the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation.
