Has anyone else noticed this trend …?

Recently it has become popular among black male adolescents using these T-shirts with pictures retouched children's cartoon characters dressed in "gangster" fashion or thug-like behavior. For example, the other day, I saw a young man with a black t-shirt with a picture of SpongeBob SquarePants, the cartoon character was wearing a baseball cap backwards and baggy clothes, sports Bling heavy, had a wad of cash in their hands and a very hard look on his face as if about to shoot someone. The design was airbrushed and obviously Nickelodeon is not official merchandise. And I have seen repeated with other characters, Popeye, Tasmanian Devil, Kermit, even Elmo. It's a bit funny and I always get a kick when I see these shirts. But nobody knows what I'm talking about? Is it just where I live, or is popular elsewhere?
